IT'S time to wrap up as a big chill is on the way.

Extremely cold weather is forecast today, with the mercury plummeting to minus temperatures tonight.

The Met Office said the day would start off dry and bright but it was going to be very cold countrywide by nightfall.

"There will be a widespread sharp to severe frost. It could hit a low of -3C in the midlands and 0C in the east," a forecaster said.

"Saturday will be bright but there'll be light rain in the north-west in the evening. Temperatures will be about 4C in the north and 7C in the south."

On Sunday, heavy showers and low temperatures are forecast.

"Temperatures will be 6C to 10C but there will be showers in most parts."
