It could be bad news for New Year's Eve revelers this weekend, as rain threatens to put a damper on the celebrations.

The rest of the week looks set to be relatively dry, with only patchy drizzle in some areas over this evening and tomorrow, while Thursday and Friday are likely to be sunny and dry.

Temperatures will range between 7 and 12c during each day, while dropping to between 1 and 6c at night.

However, there is a strong chance of rain spreading throughout the country as 2016 draws to a close.

Those going to the 3 Countdown Concert in Stephen's Green would be advised to dress for rain, according to Met Éireann.

A spokesperson said: "It looks like a band of rain will come down from the northwest throughout the day on New Year's Eve.

"As the evening goes on, this could affect partygoers throughout the country."

The rain should clear for the first day of 2017, however temperatures are once again likely to drop.
