Rare aerial footage of fin whale captured off Cork coast

Ocean Research and Conservation Ireland managed to record footage of a fin whale, in what they say is the second ever successful attempt at capturing video of the species from the air in Irish waters. The first time the species was filmed using a drone in Ireland was in 2018.

The footage was recorded as part of the Fluke Follow Project, which aims to assess the feasibility of using drones to monitor marine mammals in Irish waters.

Fin whales are said to reach 22 meters in size, and ORCI say there are only between 35,000 and 55,000 fin whales in the North Atlantic.
