Irish tech charity set up to help elderly stay connected

Covid19 Tech Help is a volunteer run helpline, created to help keep cocooning members of society stay in touch. The charity helps callers use applications such as zoom, and works to keep vulnerable members of society involved in face to face communication.

Early in April IT Professional John Harrington helped his mother who was Cocooning with her computer, so they could keep in contact during the Covid crisis.

"Once that help was completed I looked at the wider picture and said 'we need to do something for a larger demographic here'... and off we went", John told Independent.ie.

The project has had a very positive response so far, with clients such as Alan Harrisson being able to connect with his family for his 84th birthday.

The group has been partnering with other existing services for the elderly such as Alone and Age Action.

Covid19 Tech Help is made up of 71 volunteers, who responded to calls for action posted on social media.

Those looking to use the helpline can do so on 01-9633288. The service runs from 8AM to 8PM seven days a week.
