Bus Éireann has unveiled an upmarket new fleet of coaches which it claims are “better than the car”.

Access to 4G wi-fi, reclining leather seats and wooden-style flooring will be used to entice customers onto its Expressway network, with 20 buses costing €460,000 each due to enter service from next week across 23 intercity routes.

The buses are part of the company’s newtrans marketing campaign called ‘Like the car, Only better’.

Power sockets to recharge phones and laptops, ISOFIX mounting points for child seats and coat hooks are also provided to enhance the travelling experience.

The buses were built through a joint-venture partnership of Irizar in Spain and Westward Scania in Roscommon.

“Over €9.2 million was invested in the 20 new coaches which form part of Bus Éireann’s commercial fleet,” a spokeswoman said.

“The bespoke design cues, in addition to the latest emission reducing technology, air conditioning and LED uplighting, are all part of a major rebrand to show that the new top of the range coaches really are like the car, only better.

“The 20 new coaches will go into service on Expressway’s 23 intercity routes next week. Another 40 premium coaches will be delivered for the Expressway network throughout 2015, and into 2016.”

The buses are painted with the new red and silver livery, changes which the entire fleet will undergo.

Bus Éireann chief executive Martin Nolan said the luxury fleet represented a “major service upgrade” for customers, and would help maximise commercial revenues.
