CCTV: Despicable thieves steal Christmas money from an elderly couple

CCTV captures the moment an elderly couple are preyed upon by a distraction thief and his accomplice in Coventry

This is the moment a distraction thief was caught on camera stealing money from an elderly couple's car while his accomplice asked them for directions.

Police have released footage in a bid to track down the pair, who had been following the pensioners around Coventry city centre after seeing them withdraw £700 from their bank.

The footage shows one of the men asking the husband for directions, while the other grabs the wife's handbag from the car boot before rifling through it for her purse.

The criminals, who had seen the couple withdraw £700 from the bank, stole the money on November 25 as they put their shopping in their car.

Detective Sergeant Dave Faries, from West Midlands Police, said: "This was a well-planned theft in which the suspects coldly and deliberately targeted the elderly couple.

"The couple had withdrawn the money for Christmas presents for their family and thankfully, in the spirit of the festive season, the bank has refunded them all the cash.

"However, I will not rest until these despicable thieves are identified and brought to justice. We have carried out numerous inquiries in the area and checked police systems to try and identify the suspects, but now we need the public's help to trace them.

"I'd also like to urge people to be on their guard against such tactics and if a stranger approaches you in the street, make sure you keep an eye on your belongings and report any suspicious activity to police."
