My son Luke spent many, many years campaigning for us to get a dog — and for years I said no. Family circumstances and tight finances meant we wouldn’t have been able to give a pet the time and attention it needs. At one point, Luke likened his long wait to Tom Hanks’ imaginary pal — a volleyball — in the movie Castaway. So, when we finally got a dog, there was no other name he could be called except Wilson.
