Top 12: from The Commitments to Graham Norton’s Holding, here are the best screen adaptations of Irish books
12 Jack Taylor (2010–2016) A Galwegian garda turned private investigator, you say? Sure that’ll never fly! Oh, but it did — for a number of years, as it happens. Based on Ken Bruen’s mystery novels, the TV depiction of Jack Taylor was a blend of Bergerac and Red Rock, with the mandatory bang of Ballykissangel in between. Starring Scottish actor Iain Glen’s precarious Wesht of Ireland accent, some familiar bit-part actors, and the gritty streets of Galway, it’s a wonder it managed to last as long as it did.
