True stories are often the hardest to believe, and Ridley Scott’s new film House of Gucci charts a chain of events that would surely be dismissed as fanciful if they weren’t verifiably real. On the morning of March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed on his way into his office in Milan. The shooter was a Sicilian, hired — it later transpired — by Gucci’s estranged and possibly deranged wife Patrizia, who had been shut out of the family business and concocted her revenge with the help of a TV medium.
