From Metallica to Benny Hill - Irish wedding band reveals their most unusual first dance requests

As unique as the couples themselves!

Your first dance as a married couple is one you'll remember all your life together.

Whether you're keeping things kitsch with a bit of Chris de Burgh, or being two cool cats shimmying to The Cure, or joining the thousands of other couples being serenaded into married life by Kodaline, the first dance at your wedding is a special one.

So it may come as a surprise for many that one couple chose the theme tune from Benny Hill as the song for theirs, or that another went with a Metallica hit that, while maybe excellent in its own right, might not be something you'd imagine as the melodic backdrop to what's traditionally a quite romantic moment.

Dave Browne from Irish wedding band The Controversial Allstars, however, has seen (and possibly played) it all.

"We've been on the road a long time and meet other bands, we've heard stories of some interesting first dances," he said, noting Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' and the Benny Hill theme tune as being two that particularly stood out.

"I suppose one of the more unusual ones we've had might be Let's Get It On, Green Onions by Booker T and the M.G's, Madonna's Like a Virgin, Paul Simon's 50 ways to Lose a Lover and Right Said Fred's Deeply Dippy."

Deeply Dippy might have raised an eyebrow from the 47% of guests who recently told that they prefer a 'slow and romantic' tune for a couple's picture-perfect first dance, while the 23% of those who said they love when a couple goes for something 'unique' would probably have been delighted to hear something a bit different like Green Onions.

For the 20% who said they like to hear something upbeat and fun to set the tone for the dancefloor, Madonna's Like a Virgin would presumably be right up their street.

So what are the most popular acts doing the first dance rounds at the moment?

Ed Sheeran, Al Green, Kodaline, U2, The Coronas, Picture This and Etta James are some of the acts that Dave says pop up over and over for couples, noting the most popular choices to be "a serious nod to homegrown Irish songwriters."

"Everyone's song choices are an extension of their personality and add character to each event, we love seeing what the next first dance will be!"
