From donut walls to dessert tables - Five fabulous wedding cake alternatives
Alternatives to the three tiered iced white wedding cake
Don't have a sweet tooth? Or just looking for something a little different to the traditional iced white wedding cake? There are plenty of sumptuous wedding cake alternatives for your big day dessert - just think outside the cake box!
The donut wall
Ah donuts. Have we had enough of these delectable rings of soul-sellable goodness? NEVER! Hang 'em or stack 'em, DIY a donut board or have a professional whip one up for you, these treats in all their various, vibrant flavours will make for very happy guests indeed. The donut wall makes for a pretty sweet decor piece too, and makes a great addition to a dessert table if you really impress!
If you don't fancy serving them after dinner, pop the wall next to your guest book or photo booth with mini boxes and invite guests to take them home for later. Where to hire donut walls in Ireland: Try Carolynssweets.ie, candylady.ie or delishdonuts.ie (who we believe may be offering a very sweet 'donut bouquet' option for the bride in the near future!)
The pancake stack
So this one is tricky to go replacing the traditional wedding cake with, but if you're a cheerleader for the positive vibes achieved with a cheerful crepe or two, the US-led pancake stack trend could well be for you. It's certainly a sweet idea. While the ice cream cart is the go-to post-ceremony treat during the summer months, crepe vans have become a big trend for autumn / winter weddings in Ireland. For crepe van hire in Ireland, check out thecrepebox.com, classiccrepes.ie, crepewagondublin.com and thecrepeman.ie.
The DIY dessert table
If you must have a wedding cake - and by no means do you have to! - there are ways to make a sneaky saving on it. One trend that's caught on for more rustic, DIY style weddings is the BYOD - Bring your own Dessert - whereby a few homebaker style guests bring along their best cake for a communal cake and dessert table (just make sure to run it by your venue first!). Think of it like your own wedding bake off, where friends and family can dish out their favourite cupcakes, biscuits, cakepops, pies and pastries and feel like they've added to the day (in lieu of a wedding gift perhaps!) Have a few stands at the ready and some mini chalkboards for signage and ask one or two friends to take charge of setting it up (note that this will most likely only work if your ceremony and reception are in the same spot!)

For those lacking a sweet tooth the cheese wheel cake is a brilliant option to replace the traditional wedding cake. It's not cheap, but you'll have no problem finding a home for some delicious Irish dairy and it makes for a great addition to the evening buffet. You can DIY this one too, or pop to Sheridans Cheesemongers (sheridanscheesemongers.com) for some recommendations. Super Valu (supervalu.ie) do a great mix of Irish and European cheeses in their wedding cheese wheels cakes, which start at €90.

Like the dessert table, but with a bit more of a funfair element, the candy buffet has being going down a treat at Irish weddings for years. Update yours by giving it a wee pick n'mix twist, or by using homemade chocolates and sugar-free options. If your wedding is focused on the kids in the family, you could do this as a separate station just for them and add some child-friendly options like rice crispie squares and marshmallow brides and grooms. For candy buffet hire, try candycoutureireland.com or DIY your own with jars and stationery (you'll find jars in Søstrene Grene or IKEA, and signage in Easons or Dealz) and sweets from your local cash and carry.
