Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt broke up 11 years ago - why are people bringing her into his divorce?
It has been over a decade since Jennifer Aniston filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, yet for some reason people still think that she has been sitting at home pining for him all these years.
To recap, Aniston and Pitt wed in 2000 in a lavish California wedding before she filed for divorce five years later. Several months after, Pitt’s relationship with Angelina Jolie, whom he met while filming Mr and Mrs Smith, was confirmed.
Aniston and Pitt’s breakup shook the showbiz world. The entire population as we knew it was divided into two – Team Aniston and Team Jolie. T-shirts were even made to parade which team you were on.
Were you Team Aniston, who we had fallen in love with as Rachel Green in Friends, or were you Team Jolie, the “other woman” in Pitt's life?
Either way, Aniston and Pitt had divorced and his relationship with Jolie began. There was nothing we could do about it.
But why, 11 years later, are people still hanging on to the fact Pitt “fell in love” with Jolie on set while he was still married to Aniston, ultimately resulting in their divorce?
As soon as news broke that Jolie had filed for divorce from Pitt, the internet was flooded with memes of a jubilant Aniston.
Clips of the iconic scene in Friends where she says, “And that, my friend, is what they call closure,” came out of the woodwork, as if they were waiting for this moment all along.
Smug smiles, eyebrow raises, “Jennifer Aniston must be delighted,” and "Jennifer Aniston is having the last laugh" photos and comments can be found under nearly every article that mentions the Jolie-Pitt’s divorce.
Have people forgotten, however, that Aniston wed Justin Theroux in August 2015 after being engaged to the actor for three years?
That she has gone on to star in several movies and television shows, such as Horrible Bosses, We’re The Millers and Marley & Me, making her one of the most sought-after actors of our time? Not to mention that she now adds “producer” and “director” to her byline.
Aniston penned an open letter in the Huffington Post in July after rumours that she was pregnant began to circulate for the hundredth time.
She addressed the rumours, confirming they were untrue, and finished with a statement that echoes someone who’s had years of experience in learning to deal with heartbreak and love: “We get to determine our own 'happily ever after' for ourselves."
And, considering Aniston does not have any social media accounts or a personal social media presence, we can safely say that she certainly is having the last laugh, but not for Pitt and Jolie.
