Comment: Rob Kardashian's tirade shouldn't glamorise the crime that is revenge porn

Reality star Rob Kardashian's sharing of explicit images of his ex-fiancée Blac Chyna shouldn't glamorise the crime that is revenge porn, writes Amy Mulvaney

On Wednesday, Rob Kardashian shocked the world of social media when he posted explicit photos of his ex-fiancée and mother of his child Blac Chyna to Instagram.

The youngest of the Kardashian clan, Rob (30) went on a revenge porn tirade after Blac, whose real name is Angela Renée White, allegedly sent him a video of her in their bed with another man on Independence Day.

Rob shared multiple explicit images of Blac to Instagram, as well as several screenshots of conversations they previously had, and paragraphs of his own rants. The explicit images were deleted and re-uploaded within minutes of each other, while Rob continued to post for several hours before his account was deactivated by Instagram citing violations.

Blac and Rob have had a tumultuous relationship since they began dating in January last year, announcing their engagement within three months and Blac's pregnancy soon after. They welcomed their first daughter, Dream, in November, before splitting in December. Blac also has a four-year-old son with rapper Tyga, who dated Rob's younger sister Kylie Jenner for over a year. Keeping up with the Kardashians isn't so easy, is it?

Rob's mental health issues has been documented in both the family's TV show and his own spin-off programme. However, the state of his mental health does not excuse the malicious acts that Rob carried out.

Rob has kept a relatively low profile over the past several years, aside from his seven-episode run of Rob & Chyna in December where Dream’s birth was aired, and even missed sister Kim's wedding to Kanye West in 2014. While it has never officially been confirmed, reports that Rob entered rehab for drug and alcohol addiction have been in circulation over the past three years, while his mental health struggles are often discussed on the Kardashians' reality show.

While Rob's attack was clearly targeted towards Blac and the men she allegedly cheated on him with, there's one other person who has been hugely affected by the saga, intentionally or not - their eight-month-old daughter Dream. With Rob and Chyna's toxic relationship aside, as well as the fact that her family's every move has been documented since 2007, Dream will never be able to erase the history of her parents' feud from her own background.

Images of her mother will remain in the depths of the internet for as long as it exists, while the words that Rob spewed, which are not suitable to be republished here, may etch even deeper.

Unsurprisingly, Rob’s attack could even have serious legal consequences, thanks to revenge porn being criminalised under Californian law in 2013. According to Business Insider, Rob may face a six-month prison sentence or could be sued by Blac for an amount that can soar to hundreds of thousands of dollars. For someone who mentioned his concern for the welfare of his daughter while she was with Blac, who he said takes drugs, several times during his online tirade, Dream having her father sent to prison isn’t a much more favourable situation.

The Kardashians’ drama-filled life has become part of 21st century culture, whether we like it or not, but this incident contrasts greatly to anything that has ever been shared by the family before. When it comes down to basics, Rob’s actions and their consequences stand starkly for what they really are: devastating, damaging and venomous.

While the Kardashians are known for their ability to turn any negative situation into a positive one, such as Kim's famous sex tape, that isn't a possibility with what Rob has done. Even Kim’s Paris robbery, where she was reportedly held at gun point in October last year, was questioned by some as a publicity stunt, but that element isn’t present here. Rob’s posting of explicit images and sharing of intimate details about his child’s mother is exactly what it is: a revenge-fuelled tirade that will have potentially lifelong consequences for those involved, whether they want to be or not.

After taking to Instagram to air out his dirty laundry with his 9.2m followers, which reached 9.9m before the account was deleted on Wednesday, it is apparent that Rob is in desperate need of professional help, while he also needs to understand the severity of his actions.

Unlike every other move that the Kardashians have made, we can only hope that Rob’s vicious attack doesn’t glamorise revenge porn for what it is: a crime.
