The amount of time it takes for the average Irish couple to get engaged has been revealed.

As Valentine's Day approaches and proposal news on your social media feed becomes inevitable, a new survey has revealed that the average Irish couple get engaged two years and 11 months after first meeting.

The study, conducted by Interflora, surveyed one thousand couples across Ireland.

It appears that Irish people love the idea of being proposed to in public, given the opportunity for the proposal to go viral, as over 55pc of those questioned revealed they plan to propose, or would like to be proposed to, in a public location "to ensure maximum attention."

The place the couple first met topped the list of public places where someone would like to become engaged, with an exotic beach coming second.

With proposals becoming more extravagant and creative than ever, 67pc admit they feel under pressure to deliver a "unique and memorable" event as part of the proposal, with 20pc saying an extravagant proposal would make them more likely to say yes, while 10pc claim they would refuse a "thoughtless" proposal.

Furthermore, 17pc of women questioned revealed they would "be happy to be" the ones who propose to their partner.
