A new survey has revealed the five most common excuses that male cheaters use when they're trying to sneak away to their lovers.

According to data collected by affairs website Illicit Encounters, playing golf and working late are two of the most common excuses men use when looking for excuses to hide their infidelity.

The site interviewed 2000 men and found that 'playing golf' tops the list with 34 percent of cheaters admitting that's their failsafe excuse.

A spokesperson for the site, Christian Grant, explained why this lie is so common for those who have no qualms about pulling off this huge betrayal of trust: "Saying that you’re going for a round of golf ticks all the boxes. Firstly, it covers you for several hours, especially if you’re playing 18 holes and not 9."

It would appear that the energy used in trying to find stolen time with their lovers has zapped cheaters of their creativity because the rest of the excuses are just as unimaginative.

"I have a business meeting / I'm working late" is the second most popular excuse at 27 percent, followed by "going to the pub" at 13 percent.

Here are the top five excuses:

  1. Playing golf
  2. Business meeting or working late
  3. Going to the pub
  4. Going to the gym
  5. Working late
