Runaway brides and grooms: Couples who didn't make it up the aisle

In light of Rory and Caroline's shock split, we take a look at other celebrity engagements which ended before the wedding.

Before ‘Bangerz’ and ‘twerking’ entered our vocabulary, Miley Cyrus was happily in love with her Last Song co-star Liam Hemsworth. They became engaged in . After a four year relationship, they announced their split in September 2013.

Ben Affleck evidently has a thing for Jennifers; before he made an honest woman of Ms. Garner in 2005, Ben was shacking up with singer J-Lo. The pair, nicknamed ‘Bennifer’ began dating in early 2002 and were engaged within months with the help of a million dollar sparkler. The wedding was called off hours before the scheduled event in September 2003.

Before Blake and Scarlett, there was Alanis. Canadians Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morisette got engaged in 2004. The actor and the Ironic-singer called off the engagement in 2007, stating that they still remain “close friends with utmost love and admiration for each other”

Kim Kardashian’s previous weddings are public knowledge, but many people don’t know is that her fiancé was previously engaged to fashion designer Alexis Phifer. Kanye and Alexis began their relationship in 2002 and he proposed to her in 2006. The engagement was ended in 2008 when Kanye moved his sights on to model Amber Rose.

Thespian Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder met on the set of Edward Scissorhands when she was eight years his junior. The relationship and engagement did not last, but Johnny infamously got his name tattooed on him. Johnny had previously been married for two years in the early 1980s. Evidently a serial proposer, Johnny popped the question to Jennifer Grey and Sherilynn Finn before the decade was out. After a 15 year relationship with Vanessa Paradis, Johnny is now engaged to actress Amber Heard who is 23 years younger than him.

In the early noughties, iconic supermodel Kate Moss began a doomed relationship with musician Pete Doherty. Tabloid scandals, drug allegations and rumours of cheating meant that they called off their engagement in 2007. Kate is now happily married to The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince.

It appears Hollywood isn’t all that different to a High School clique; before marrying America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow were the elite couple of Tinseltown. The pair met when they filmed the thriller Seven together in 1995. In December 1996, Brad popped the question and the wedding was set for the following summer. That never happened, and Gwyneth eventually married Chris Martin in 2003.

Coronation Street stunner Michelle Keegan is currently loved up with reality TV star Mark Wright. Until April 2012, Michelle was in a rocky-relationship with The Wanter singer Max George. The pair became engaged in June 2011 after seven months of dating.

At one stage, Jude Law and Sienna Miller were the ‘golden couple’ of the London social scene. The Alfie co-stars dated for two years before Sienna called off the engagement when Jude confessed to cheating on her with his children’s nanny in July 2005. They rekindled their flame in December 2009 but split again in February 2011. Sienna is currently engaged to Tom Sturridge, the father of her daughter Marlowe.
