The secret to a happy relationship might be easier than you think.

The average married couple reports having sex once a week keeps them content.

A study by the University of Toronto-Mississuaga surveyed 2,400 married couples over the course of 14 years at three different time points and found the common sexual frequency is once every seven days for maximum relationship satisfaction.

Having sex more than once per week showed no benefit.

"Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week," the study's lead researcher Dr Amy Muise said.

"Our findings suggest that it's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner, but you don't need to have sex every day as long as you're maintaining that connection."
