Coming soon... the most-likely day of the year to get dumped
Valentine’s Day may be all hearts and flowers, but not everyone will be celebrating it too happily.
‘Red Tuesday’ – four days before Valentine’s Day - is the top ‘dumping day’ of the year, according to new research.
According to new research by dating website, Illicit Encounters, there is a sharp increase in people breaking up with their partners four days before Valentine’s Day.
Over 3,000 people were surveyed and the majority said they had broken up with someone the week before the romantic day takes place.
You’re also less likely to even get a call about your break up, as results show that dumping someone by text is the most popular choice. Charming!
The most popular method of doing the unpleasant deed was via text, but some also chose social media (Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter) if they didn't have the nerve for face-to-face contact, according to the site.
“There are many different reasons people make such a drastic decision so close to Valentine’s Day,” psychologist Lucy Redford said.
“Some people realise how much they don’t love someone with the romanticism in the air, some buckle under the pressure of committing, others think they can probably do better if they’re not happy and because Valentine’s Day is a national celebration, it’s hard to ignore.
"For a lot of couples, the 14th of February brings them closer together and makes them realise how in love they are. For others, it’s a reminder of the cracks in their relationship,” she said.
“Staying when it’s not working can be a lot more toxic in the long run than going your separate ways,” she added.
