Ruth Negga looked every inch the A-list star last night as she made her debut at the 89th Academy Awards in Hollywood, hoping to take home the gold for Ireland.

The actress (35) cut a super-chic figure on the red carpet of the Dolby Theatre in LA and betrayed no sign of nerves, despite having the eyes of the world's media on her.

She chose Canadian stylist Karla Welch to put together her look for her big moment in the spotlight, having turned heads at a string of recent Hollywood parties clad in Gucci, Valentino and Chanel. Welch is the woman responsible for over-hauling Justin Bieber's image.

Ruth's dress was custom-made to fit her petite frame to perfection, as she rubbed shoulders with some of the world's best-known stars.

She was there with long-term boyfriend Dominic Cooper as he supported her for the biggest moment of her career.

Negga also took the opportunity to don a blue ribbon in support of the American Civil Liberties Union's 'Stand with ACLU' campaign.

Last night saw her battling it out for the coveted Best Actress accolade for her acclaimed role playing Mildred in the smash-hit movie 'Loving'.

Going up against some stiff competition, she was given outsider odds of 28/1 to win over rivals Meryl Streep, nominated for 'Florence Foster Jenkins' and Natalie Portman, for her role in 'Jackie'.

Other nominees included Emma Stone for her turn in the hit musical 'La La Land' - which was hotly tipped to be the big winner last night - as well as Isabelle Huppert in 'Elle'.

When asked earlier about what she would be wearing for the celebrity-filled ceremony, Ruth said Welch would "kill me" if she revealed too much.

"I'm wearing a very beautiful dress. It does take a long time to get ready but that's something I want to enjoy and savour.

"There are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and I want to enjoy it," she said.

Her stylist described it as "simple and elegant and perfect for the Oscars" and added: "There's a quietness to the look but it's major."

Negga has been commanding a lot of the headlines over in America in recent weeks, thanks to her unique heritage and shining talent as she did the rounds of the top celebrity bashes.

The half-Ethiopian star opted to wear a Rodarte ensemble for the LA premiere of 'Loving' and has also been going for Valentine, Miu Miu, and Monse, which have all helped her land on a number of best-dressed lists.

Also flying the flag for Ireland last night was top costume designer Consolata Boyle, who was nominated for a second time for her work on 'Florence Foster Jenkins'.

Colin Farrell's movie 'The Lobster' also got a nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category.
