And the winners and losers are...
Hollywood turned out in force for the 69th Emmy Awards. Meadhbh McGrath picks the best-dressed stars on the red carpet - and the worst
The 2017 Emmys delivered one of the best red carpets in recent memory, as stars took a risk in everything from blinding sequins to show-stopping reds.
Red is the shade of the season, and Nicole Kidman wore it best, in a stunning Calvin Klein by Appointment silk gown with a pleated bodice and pink heels. Heidi Klum didn't fare so well - her plunging dress looked cheap, and the stacks of wooden bangles, along with a wooden clutch and wooden earrings, didn't help matters.
Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction in Zac Posen as her Spanx peeked out of the bizarre midriff cut-out.
Her co-star Ariel Winter is similarly unafraid of showing a little (or a lot) of skin, but her Zuhair Murad gown with eye-watering thigh slits made jaws drop for all the wrong reasons.
Wearing the rainbow can be a gamble, but Tessa Thompson's Rosie Assoulin dress did everything right - the cut showcased her toned arms, while the pleated skirt was a marvel on the red carpet.
Dior has had a patchy record of late, but Zoe Kravitz found gold at the end of her multi-coloured feathered gown, one of the evening's biggest hits.
Thandie Newton, meanwhile, showed how a simple look can make just as much of an impact - her pastel pink Jason Wu number was gorgeously elegant.
Michelle Pfeiffer continued her style streak in semi-sheer Oscar de la Renta, while her glossy curls and luminous complexion offered a masterclass in ageless beauty.
Robin Wright could have taken a few notes - if her fake tan wasn't distracting enough, her blunt fringe and shaggy bob looked totally out of sync with her strapless Mugler gown, complete with poky horns adorning the cleavage.
In another case of questionable hair styling, Jessica Biel's towering pompadour, combined with her glitzy Ralph and Russo dress, was easily 'Most Dynasty' on the night. But otherwise, this was a standout year for red carpet fashion.
Let's just hope it continues through the rest of awards season.
