Buying lingerie can be intimidating - and not just for men at Christmas time. Women who want functional and pretty pieces can often find the selection on offer intimidating, and they resort to buying the same shape and size but in different colours. But our modern lifestyle increasingly requires different pieces in our lingerie wardrobe, so that's why we took ourselves off to get expert advice - and illustrate it with a gorgeous shoot showcasing pieces from the latest lingerie and loungewear collection at Penneys.

Lisa Shannon, director of lingerie and nightwear buying at Penneys, says: "The trend for visible lingerie is still going strong so we know a lot of customers are investing in pieces that they're happy to have peeping out from under a blazer or blouse. It's sexy, but for the wearer rather than anyone else.

"If you are buying lingerie for someone and are unsure on size, my best advice is to shop outside of the classic bra shape. Bralettes are ideal and really on trend. Team with a matching brief and you have a really sweet, well-thought-out gift. Equally, a lace-trimmed cami and French knicker combo makes for a really luxurious present. We sell in separates, and in gift boxes if you want to save on wrapping.

"Bodies with appliqué and cut-out detail are also a clever way of buying something a little bit sexy without knowing bra size.

"In terms of colour, don't get hung up on the festive palette. You want the recipient to be able to wear this after Christmas. Soft neutrals are flattering on skin tones, while dark florals are perfect for the under- wear-as-outerwear trend. And don't forget the kimono: something you'll be as comfortable in with your pyjamas as you would be in jeans and a T-shirt.

"We've shot this velvet-trimmed devoré style (pictured right) that will look as well on a night out as it would for a night in."
