Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction

Jennifer Lawrence has become the latest celeb to suffer a fatal 'wardrobe malfunction', writes Deirdre Reynolds

Even her frock got a fright – gaping open across the thighs as she took to the stage to accept the gong.

It's Silver Linings Playbook star Jen's second award of the season.

Sadly, there was no silver lining on the tiered Christian Dior Haute Couture dress – just sheer lining that made it look like it had split open when the actress's heel caught on her hem.

Like a true pro, Jennifer (22) recovered gracefully from the frock-up to give a sweet thank-you speech.

Ahead of the Oscars next month, however, Hollywood's latest wardrobe malfunction is sure to give the female contenders a few sleepless nights.

"It's every girl's worst nightmare," admits TV stylist Sonja Mohlich. "But these things happen on live television.

"All you can do is fix it as quickly as possible and keep smiling.

"As a stylist, it's happened to me on numerous occasions.

"Once on The Voice, a contestant didn't wear their robe to lunch and got melon all over their top with twenty minutes to go.

"I had to quickly wash it and dry it with a hairdryer.

'Quite often with awards ceremonies, celebrities are sent sample dresses from the upcoming season," adds Sonja. "So they're not always fitted properly.

"Jennifer's dress may have been a tad too long on the night.

"You just have to think on your feet – and always keep a safety pin in your handbag!"

But J.Law isn't the first to fall victim to the dreaded wardrobe malfunction.

Just moments before scooping the Emmy for 'Outstanding Comedy Series' last year, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara bust out of her figure-hugging Zuhair Murad gown. Not that the 40-year-old has anything to hide.

She later tweeted a picture of her escaped derrière with the caption: "Dress malfunction!!! Thank you emergency team!!"

Footloose star Julianne Hough (24) looked flawless when she turned up to InStyle's Golden Globes party in floor-sweeping Jenny Packham recently.

After letting her hair down on the dance floor however, she inadvertently ended up doing "an Angelina" with two thigh-high splits.

But Ryan Seacrest's other half laughed off the wardrobe malfunction: "I love to dance regardless of how expensive a dress may be."

Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, admits she was mortified after giving fans an eyeful at the premiere of Les Misérables in New York last month.

From Fantine to obscene, the actress accidentally flashed her lady bits in a BDSM-style Tom Ford affair.

"I was getting out of the car and my dress was so tight that I didn't realise it until I saw all the photographers' flashes," explains Hathaway (30).

"It was devastating. They saw everything. I might as well have lifted up my skirt for them."

Of course, not all wardrobe malfunctions come as a shock to the wearer.

Queen of the nip slip Janet Jackson (46) sparked uproar when surprise guest Justin Timberlake 'accidentally' ripped off part of her Alexander McQueen bustier during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

"[Justin] was [supposed to] rip the piece off that he did, but more came off than what was supposed to," the singer defended.

"It was absurd – so much more important things were going on in the world and the focus was on my breast."

At least no one could accuse presenter Judy Finnigan (64) of orchestrating her infamous wardrobe malfunction at the 2000 National TV Awards.

Accepting an award with husband Richard Madeley, the mum of four seemed blissfully unaware that her dress had fallen down, exposing her white bra to the nation until fellow presenter John Leslie leaped to her rescue.

"The biggest wardrobe malfunction I see on fashion shoots is over-exposure," says stylist Sharon Huggard of

'Plunging necklines that reveal too much and dresses that ride up when you sit down."

"If you're going to a big event, my advice is to road test your dress at home first.

"Literally try getting in and out of your car or bending over to pick something up in the dress.

"See how the dress photographs, especially in sunlight, to make sure you're not exposing anything you don't want to.

"Fashion tape, nipple covers and seamless knickers are all musts."

It's advice that's sure to resonate with Emma Watson.

Despite her best efforts, at just 22, the Harry Potter star has already suffered a series of embarrassing slip-ups on the red carpet – including flashing a nipple pastie in a revealing Giorgio Armani gown and flesh-coloured knickers in a breezy Ossie Clark design.

Then again, as Watson herself put it afterwards: "At least I'm wearing underwear!"
