Bairbre Power explores clothes with an inbuilt surprise that's perfect for day-to-evening outfits.
There's absolutely no reason to be bored with your fashion choices this summer. The trends are user-friendly, with powerful shots of colour to lift the spirits.
But, some days, it's nice to produce the odd surprise, the proverbial fashion rabbit out of the hat. With that in mind, I'm exploring separates and dresses with unexpected windows and revealing panels.
Fitness fanatics have been sharp to the merits of cutaway backs and sheer mesh panelling for years, and this season, the sporting aesthetic reached the catwalk.
Stella McCartney excelled with inserted panels, but now that the sunshine has arrived, we can afford to be more playful.
Case in point is the uber- versatile cream jumpsuit (€75) from Wallis with the attractive criss-cross openwork at the back, which arrives into store next week.
Pop on a buttoned-up nautical cardi and it looks like an ordinary pair of cream trousers for the office. However, for Friday outfits, it's ideal for desk-to-dinner wear.
MSGM is a terrific label new to BT2 and its dress (page 27) with cutaway back comes in coral or black.
If you are less keen about baring your back, use chiffon cleverly -- the pieces I found at Pubic Beware, a lively store owned by Edel O'Connor in Dublin's Temple Bar, were brilliant.
In fact, it's almost impossible to find anything costing over €60.
Black fiends who cannot stray from their noir safety net in summer should explore Public Beware's lightweight knit cardis with a huge point of difference.
The back is one glorious window panel of sheer chiffon -- all the better to show off your bra top, svelte midriff and cutaway shorts.
Ditto the black dress (€45) (in panel) which has a completely sheer back, while the cream and black blouse pictured left has a dramatic window cut out of the back.
