You may not know the difference between a peony rose and an orchid, but in the hands of fashion aces Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler, botanicals invaded the catwalk and delivered punchy appeal.

Flower power has filtered down spectacularly from catwalk to high street, where the Oasis brand has shown spectacular green-fingered dexterity, from big, blousy yellow blooms to more subtle daisy prints, with a nod to the China-blue story, which is popping up everywhere.

Rodarte paid homage to Van Gogh's sunflowers, while Prabal Gurung, the new star in New York fashion, interpreted floral motifs in a very modern way.

So too have Penneys and Karen Millen.
