The potions to jazz you out of hibernation. . .

I can't be the only one who marked the start of 2014 with pale, worn-out skin, puffy red-rimmed eyes and a solemn vow that it would all be different this year. Two weeks in, and I'm revelling in hibernation -- and while I know this is just a phase (roll on payday, please!), right now, my body and soul are definitely benefiting. I've found some products that have demonstrably helped to banish the shameful memory of the last days of 2013.

Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment, €33: Packed with quinoa protein and several other organic ingredients, this leave-in treatment is designed to strengthen, so it's great for over-processed hair. Use twice a week at most.

Lush Geophyzz bath ballistic, €5.20: Its blend of Hawaiian volcanic salt and coarse sea salt performs double duty, helping to nourish dry dehydrated skin and easing tired, sore gym muscles.

Elemis Cellutox Active Body Oil, €42: Pricey, but worth it if you use it as a targeted treatment on thighs, bottom and arms. Absorbs easily, and leaves my skin feeling noticeably smoother.

Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque, €40.20: Gives dull skin a real lift, leaving it glowing. Use this calming, nourishing mask after exfoliation. Highly recommended.

SteamCream, €13: This multi-purpose balm has a surprisingly light texture and can be used on face, hands and body. It heats up upon contact with skin, helps to purge pores and is packed with moisturising oatmeal and healing lavender.

Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Face and Neck Creme SPF 15, €75: Expensive, but good value because this really is a treat for complexions, especially drier ones, at this time of year. Leaves skin feeling tighter and smoother with a natural, matte finish. But it's wasted on anyone under 35.

Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energising Eye Mask, €45: Chill this in the fridge for about 30 minutes and then place it over for your eyes for as long as you can to let the cucumber extracts really depuff and revive tired peepers.

Ole Henriksen New Beginning Skin Smoothing Scrub, €40 (from Harvey Nichols in Dundrum Town Centre): With its key ingredients of tea tree oil and aloe vera, this works wonders on neglected bodies.
