The bold and the beautiful for the New Year

Classic patterns are big news for the New Year, with bold-yet-simple designs dominating the catwalks.

Many designers shunned over-the-top prints in favour of classic shapes for their Fall/Winter 13 collections.

Victoria Beckham chose bold rectangles in black and bronze, hitting the trend for classic shapes.

Her model teamed the mini dress with a giant beanie hat, as well as knee-high black boots, which hit another winter trend right on the head.

The celebrated designer also played around with circles in a black and grey top, which was teamed with a simple pair of blue jeans. The large beanie hat and knee-high boots were again made use of for this daytime look.

Carolina Herrera went for squares, in an oriental inspired dress that fell to the knees.

The bold white shapes were outlined with black lines to set the graphic style off even more. The long-sleeved beige dress was completed with black cuffs and a black bow delicately placed on the neckline for a girly take on the style.

Rag & Bone sampled a classic grey and black houndstooth print.

Wrapped up in a patterned winter cover up, the model added a splash of colour to the winter hues with a long-sleeved orange T-shirt, just visible under the winter warmer.

The Thakoon show saw the use of animal print teamed with leather detailing.

Leopard print was a winter runway winner, with Thakoon's take on the trend teaming a simple skirt and top together with a skinny leather belt. Extra detailing gives this trend added impact.
