Thalia Heffernan: New York's great, but I'm a homebird and miss my friends

Dublin teen model Thalia Heffernan is on top of the world with her new career in New York, but says it's a pity she can't move her friends and family over.

"I've spent the past five weeks in New York. On Sunday I arrived back in Dublin and was met at the gate by my boyfriend Anthony. He had a huge bunch of flowers with him, which was the nicest thing ever," she said.

"I went over to New York at the start of November to meet with agents and model and I fell in love with the place.

"When I first drove into the city I was blown away. It was dusk and you could see the sun set on Fifth Avenue and I was in awe of the place -- I couldn't believe it was real."

The model also spoke on RTÉ's TwoTube about her first appointment with Ford model agency in the city.

"I did a few tests and portfolio shoots while I was over there. You have to have a different portfolio for every city you go to -- they all have their own style.

"New York shoots are more editorial and edgy -- they would put concealer all over my eye brows and pink eye shadow on my eyelids, whereas in London it's minimal make up," she continued.

"I felt very at ease in Manhattan but I don't think I could live there permanently. I'm a complete home bird and I really missed my family and friends.

"If I could pack them all up and move them to NY it would be ideal."

But the city can also take its toll, the model said.

"My head now knows I'm home and I can relax so my body is taking full advantage," she said.

"Since I got home, people have been asking if I'm going to go over to London for Fashion Week but that's not the route I want to go down. I don't care too much about getting noticed on the big runways.

"I'm pretty laid back when it comes to all this stuff. As long as the clients are happy, I'm happy. I don't feel the need to be published in Vogue. It would be great if it happened but I'm not going to push for it."

Right now, Thalia is just looking forward to the festive break.

"On Monday I spent the day chilling out with my family and friends. I watched some Christmas movies which got me very excited for the festive season," she said.

"My friends then came over and we talked for ages. I told them about spotting Misha Barton in Union Square and they told me what had been going on while I was away.

"On Tuesday I called into my agent Rebecca Morgan to touch base before they close for Christmas. I found out I'd signed with German label Pro Mod. I've never been to Germany so I can't wait to see what it is like.

"I'm starting to get into fitness. My cousin Simon Heffernan is a personal trainer. He works at The Gym in Rathgar and knows everything about staying in shape," she continued.

"Since leaving school it's been go-go-go, I was in Spain, London and New York so I haven't had time to think about the gym. But now I want to get my head in gear and focus on it a little more."
