HOW TO WEAR - ON THE GRID

This season it's hip to be square.

Traditional tartans planted themselves firmly back on the fashion agenda this time last year and for AW/14, checks, tartans and plaids play second fiddle to their more striking sibling, windowpane checks or grid checks as they're also commonly known. Windowpane checks first appeared a couple of season's ago but for AW/14 they've been given an über-sophisticated finish.

Varying degrees of grid print appeared on the AW/14 catwalks including at Giles, Marc By Marc Jacobs and Meadham Kirchhoff. But it's Chloé's take on the graphic pattern that created one of the most eye-catching looks of the season. In fact, their windowpane check flutter dress in crisp monochrome has already proved a sell-out.

Essentially a simplified check, this style lends itself to a more minimal aesthetic and gives classic ginghams and plaids a more modern feel. What's more, if you want to be a little more adventurous with your personal style, the clean lines make it easy to double up. Need styling inspiration? Just look to Olivia Palermo, Keira Knightley and Victoria Beckham.
