Queen Letizia of Spain is earning her royal fashion stripes.

The 44-year-old former tv journalist is on track to surpassing Britain's Kate Middleton as the world's best dressed royal and pulled a move straight from the Duchess of Cambridge's playbook for an event in Madrid.

The mother-of-two turned heads in a crinkle cut sleeveless Nina Ricci dress, the same piece she wore to meet former US First Lady Michelle Obama last year.

And while Kate might be championing Prada lately, Letizia still prefers Spanish designer Magrit's red buckle heel, finishing off her look with a snakeskin clutch by Carolina Herrera.

She was on hand to mark the annual meeting with director of Cervantes Institutes at Museo Ruso San Petersburgo in Malaga today, her latest in a busy summer of events - she and husband King Felipe just returned last week from their state visit to the UK and the royal couple generally make an average of two appearances per week, meaning she is one of the most exposed royals in Europe.
