I tried this season's most in-demand jacket - and it's from Lidl's collection with Heidi Klum
Supermodel Heidi Klum has teamed up with Lidl to release a capsule collection - and I had an exclusive look at the most coveted piece.
News of the collaboration between the German fashion designer and bargain supermarket was equal parts surprising and intriguing. With prices ranging between €5.99 and €59.99 for the collection, including shoes, coats and jeans, I put the stand out piece of the leather jacket to the test.
Upon hearing about the inclusion of a leather jacket, I automatically presumed that it would be faux. Yet, after inspection of the product label, I was gladly proven wrong as the outer material is 100pc real leather. Yep, a real leather jacket from Lidl. The place where you go to buy vegetables for 49c and can manage to get a weekly shop for less than €50 now boasts a real leather jacket as one of its products.
Unlike many clothing items that are sold in supermarkets, the jacket wasn't thrown into a thin, clear plastic bag with popper buttons as its parcel. Instead, it comes in an impressive display box with pictures of a model wearing the jacket and Heidi Klum herself on the front, as well as a section that allows you to feel the material.
It's a biker style with a slim fit that feels comfortable yet structured when you try it on. The deep tan colour is eye-catching, while the silver hardware is a nice feature without being garish. The suede leather is soft but hardy, and is the perfect balance between being luxurious and hard-wearing. Unlike many biker jackets, it doesn't feature any belts or buckles that hang out of place and, honestly, I can't think of anything that can be improved.
Of course, a leather jacket with a suede finish requires a certain level of care, but after wearing the jacket over the past week, which included throwing it into my handbag and walking in the rain, I haven't had any issues with the material being tarnished in any way.
It's practical, warm and stylish all rolled into one. Not to mention, it can be dressed up or down and matches nearly everything, from jeans to skirts, to dresses and trousers.
Now, let's talk about price. The jacket, which also comes in black, rests as the most expensive item in the collection at a steady €59.99. I can hear horrified readers thinking, '€60 for a jacket from Lidl? No thanks', but bear with me. Yes, the jacket is from Lidl, but it's also 100pc leather, is part of an exclusive collection with one of the most well-known supermodels in the world and fits and looks like a dream. Considering that Topshop stocks a very similar option for a hefty €235, and The Kooples sold a very similar option for the price of €745 (as loved by Amy Huberman), I think you're getting a pretty good deal, to say the least.
While €59.99 is by no means an amount of money that many can spend mindlessly, it's undoubtedly a good investment for the coming autumn/winter, and even years, if taken care of correctly.
Although I originally began wearing this jacket as part of this trial, I've continued to wear it as my jacket of choice for day-to-day - and I've honestly never received so many compliments. People are unable to hide their shock when I grin and tell them it's from Lidl, and that in itself is pretty satisfying.
While I may not have Heidi Klum's supermodel legs or washboard abs, this jacket is a more than suitable replacement.
Get ready to queue outside Lidl when the collection launches on September 18 - I know I'll be there to buy the black version.
