How to wear sock boots

It's the trend that's become unavoidable, and might even be worth ditching your Chelsea boots for

Every few months a trend comes along and becomes completely ubiquitous - it's all over the catwalks, in every magazine and ruling the high street. Last season, it was ruffles, deconstructed shirting and pool slides. For autumn, we already have a contender: close-fitting, pull-on ankle boots with a razor sharp point and stiletto heels.

Designed with a sock-like fit, the boots became a cult hit when Demna Gvasalia, creative director at both Balenciaga and Vetements, showed them on the catwalk last year. He's since presented sock boots in velvet, lurex and stretch-jersey, calf and thigh high, in bold colours and prints. Kanye West also offered streetwear-inspired sock boots at Yeezy, while Fendi showcased striped versions and Burberry added sculpted heels.

The sock boot was an instant street style favourite, and celebrities quickly followed suit. Rihanna was, as usual, an early adopter, while at the Met Ball this year, Salma Hayek and Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge stepped out in blue and red pairs, respectively.

It's the boot of choice for models like Kendall Jenner and the Hadids, while Miranda Kerr (right) has been spotted in the black thigh-high versions on several occasions. She offered a classier take on the trend by styling hers to peek out beneath the hem of a navy miniskirt and long-sleeved top, with a cream overcoat on top. She was completely covered up, yet the mix of chic separates and form-fitting fabrics made her look polished - crucial if you're daring the taller boots.

If you are going to try out a thigh-high pair, make sure your skirt or dress covers the tops, as that flash of thigh can be deeply unforgiving. Salma Hayek opted for a boldly coloured pair on the red carpet, but toned things down in a plain black gown with an up-to-there slit. Her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, runs the company that owns Balenciaga, so it's unsurprising she would try the trend, and while the 50-year-old has a fairly wacky red carpet history, we like the fierceness of this look.

The ankle boots are far more wearable, and look great with everything from office-appropriate pencil skirts to jeans and a t-shirt.

Take your cue from Emma Watson (left), who paired black ankle boots with a cut-out midi dress for a look that instantly felt fresh and contemporary. The midi length is ideal; Watson is 5ft 5in and achieves just the right glimpse of calf between the hem and the boot. For work, try a fluted hem midi with a crisp white blouse, and a kitten heel boot in bold red, the colour of the season. Checked suits are big news for autumn, and a structured trouser suit looks modern with a roll-neck knit and sleek sock boots.

A brightly coloured pair will lift any outfit, and a zingy yellow injects just the right dose of cheerfulness as temperatures drop. Wear with a floral dress for a vibrant date night look, and with jeans and a blazer for easy off-duty cool.

Uterque's glitter stripe pair are deliciously luxe and perfect for dressing up cropped denim, while patterned pairs like Zara's floral kitten heels add interest to a block-coloured midi dress. Say goodbye to your Chelsea boots - this is one body-con trend we can get on board with.
