A question of style: the ones to watch
From promising newcomers to established stars enjoying a resurgence, Meadhbh McGrath counts down the names to know in 2018...
The 69-year-old Canadian has over five decades of modeling experience, but she's enjoying a bit of a resurgence at the moment. She recently signed with IMG (the agency that represents Gigi Hadid), became brand ambassador for CoverGirl cosmetics and ruled the runway at New York Fashion Week for spring-summer 2018. Mother to the SpaceX entrepreneur Elon, she is known for her shock of white hair and striking personal style, whether laidback in trainers and a smart roll-neck, or making a major statement on the red carpet.
Following her scene-stealing turn in the RTE sitcom Nowhere Fast, the Galway-born actress stars in Mark O'Rowe's highly-anticipated new play The Approach this spring. As well as a second season of Nowhere Fast, Belton will appear in a big-budget adaptation of Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White on BBC One with Charles Dance. We're sure this winning streak will be accompanied by plenty of stylish opportunities to showcase her trademark quiet elegance.
The 34-year-old impressed in TV series Westworld and superhero blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, and she stole the show at the 2017 Emmys in a dazzling rainbow Rosie Assoulin gown. We love to see an up-and-coming actress taking risks with her wardrobe, and Thompson's brand of red carpet glamour with a modern edge makes her a style star on the rise.
The breakout star of John Carney's Sing Street has a busy year ahead of her, with a starring role as Freddie Mercury's companion Mary Austin in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. And we can't wait for her press tour wardrobe: the 23-year-old has already stepped out in sleek Prada pastels and opulent embroidered floral Erdem, so there can only be more great things to come.
After her award-winning role in American Crime Story, the 43-year-old's star is set to rise and rise this year, with parts in Oscar-tipped The Post and summer blockbuster Ocean's 8. She always looks carefully put-together - and shares a stylist, Karla Welch, with Ruth Negga. Refreshingly, Paulson isn't afraid of a daring look, whether it's show-stopping Carolina Herrera sequins fresh off the runway or colour-clashing tie-dye Calvin Klein.
The Stranger Things cast is one of the most consistently well-dressed in Hollywood. You're probably familiar with this young actress's co-star Millie Bobby Brown, the 13-year-old who took the fashion world by storm following the premiere of the hit Netflix show. In the second season, we were introduced to Max, played by Sink - another style star in the making. Aged 15 years old, she has shown sartorial wisdom way beyond her years, in androgynous Alexander Wang, pretty Prada and ultra-chic Chanel.
The former Fair City actress had an eventful 2017, during which she really proved her fashion credentials in glamorous evening and off-duty looks. Now that the 29-year-old is expecting her first child, she'll definitely be one to keep an eye on for maternity dressing inspiration - we're excited to see how she pulls it off.
As Elvis's grandchild and Michael Jackson's stepdaughter, the 28-year-old was destined for fame, but eager to earn a reputation based on her own merit. She has succeeded with critically-acclaimed acting roles in American Honey and Logan Lucky - and a side gig as a fashion darling, becoming one of the faces of Louis Vuitton and a regular on the front row at fashion week. This year will be her biggest yet, with the release of buzzy Under the Silver Lake and Lars von Trier's serial killer drama The House that Jack Built - and a string of red carpets to boot.
