Style Jury: Day One of Cannes Film Festival
From the good, the bad and the ugly...Freya Drohan gives her style verdicts from the Cannes Film Fesitval
The “Most Glamorous Festival on Earth” opened yesterday with a typically star studded premiere of Grace of Monaco.
Jane Fonda continues to defy her 76 years in a fitted ruby gown by Elie Saab. Long sleeves and an age appropriate hair style ensured she did not stray into ‘mutton’ territory.
Also rocking a sumptuous burgundy hue was Blake Lively. Blake (26) is always immaculately turned out, and on this occasion it was no different. She wore a silk-chiffon Gucci Premiere gown with a thigh high split and high racer neck detailing. Her tousled plaited hair-do kept things youthful and fashion forward.
My best dressed of Day One goes to actress Zoe Saldana. Zoe rarely puts a foot wrong in the style stakes. The 35-year-old wore a Victoria Beckham Fall 2014 pleated white dress with chain link belt and rose gold earrings. A vision of elegance as always.
Paz Vega, who stars in Grace of Monaco, also opted for a couture piece from Elie Saab. The actress who is not afraid to take risks on the red carpet played it safe and chose a Spring 2014 cocktail dress with delicate pearl embellishment. She finished the look with classic nude Louboutin ‘Pigalle’ pumps.
Nicole Kidman has an intrinsic ability to ensure all eyes at a premiere are on her. As the star of the evening’s cinematic screening, Nicole (46) upped her game in an Armani Privé Spring 2014 creation. The futuristic strapless blue dress is a true work of art. Simple diamond earrings and a bracelet courtesy of Harry Winston complemented her look.
French actress and Cannes rookie Adele Exarchopoulos made an impressive debut on the red carpet. Adele (20) wore a sleek custom Louis Vuitton dress with a pleather bralet and white column skirt. A deliberately tousled hairdo lent an innocent finish to her sexy outfit.
For a guaranteed knock out red carpet look, celebrities look no further than couturier Stéphane Rolland (case in point Cheryl Cole in 2011 and 2012). Asian actress Zhang Ziyi made a daring move with an edgy look from his Spring 2014 Couture collection complete with a delicate white skirt and PVC detailed bodice. The verdict is still out on this one, but her unique style must be applauded.
