Style Dilemma: Where to find a good-value winter coat
Like a lot of people, money is tight this year and I'm hoping to get a new winter coat at a reasonable price. I got a parka in Penneys two winters ago, but it's started to look a bit ragged. Where would you suggest looking?Susan, Limerick
Modern military continues to be one of the dominant themes for the season ahead, with army detailing on everything from accessories to shoes.
Military-inspired outerwear in particular featured prominently on the catwalks, from Victoria Beckham to Moschino and Tommy Hilfiger.
On the high street, Zara has captured this utilitarian style perfectly with its latest range of coats.
Traditional military touches such as brass buttons, strong shoulders and clean-cut lines appear across the collection, from crisp, double-breasted, khaki-green coats (€129) to hybrid styles combining military and biker influences.
One of my personal favourites is the three-quarter-length charcoal biker-style coat with epaulets (€169) -- it's just the right side of moody.
At H&M, you'll find a chic, grey wool-blend coat (€129). With a large collar, hidden buttons and slightly shorter sleeve, this is a versatile coat that will cover you for the school run to nights out.
For everyday wear, H&M also has a navy parka with a detachable faux-fur trim hood and a concealed drawstring at the waist and hem (€69.95).
For a spot of winter colour, Sisley's red- and-black cocoon-shape coat has a distinct retro feel (€189, Clerys).
Similarly, Alwear's full-skirted check coat (€95) is a cute, feminine cover-all, while Dunnes Stores' 'Borg' hooded duffel coat (€45) is another reasonably priced, easy-to-wear option.
As always, there's great value to be found at Penneys. Its faux-fur trim wrap coat is an elegant yet snug winter cover-up (€40).
