I picked up a pair of yellow, green and black floral trousers (half price!) to wear on my birthday at the end of April. I've never worn such a busy pattern and feel a bit clueless as to what to wear with them. I would love advice on any tops you think would work. I'm 5ft 8in and a generous size 12. The popularity of printed trousers continues this spring/summer, with everything from florals to geometric shapes to wallpaper prints showing up on pants.

Prints can be a bit daunting at first. For inspiration, look to Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne or Olivia Palermo, who are regularly spotted wearing all manner of pattern and print.

An easy introduction is to choose separates in one of the colours in the print. For instance, layer the yellow 'Cara' jersey vest (1 €12, Boohoo) over a white tee for a simple, modern look.

Black is a great fail-safe, so for an overall look that's streamlined and sleek, opt for a classic black roll neck. Keep the styling fresh with H&M's black marl woven coat (2 €69.95), teamed with the black patent T-bar sandal with metal trim by Hashtag (3 €58.43, Asos).

For a statement look with serious fashion cred, try clashing your prints. By deliberately mixing prints of different sizes, you create the ultimate contrast. For instance, an oversized tropical floral- pattern blouse or Acne's green-dollar-print shirt (4 €300, Samui) will provide the perfect clash.

If you dare to bare your midriff, keep things cool by opting for the varsity embellished crop tee from Penneys (5 €10), teamed with a pair of razor-sharp stilettos for an edgy, dressed-up/down look.
