I am a grandmother, 5ft 2in, a size 12 and with brown hair. I have very bad legs and my ankles are quite large. I'm attending a wedding in Ireland in May, and one in Poland in June. Any suggestions on what I might wear to both events? Carmel in distress! (56) Co Kildare

If your calves are a bit thicker than you'd like, there are a couple of things you can do to play them down and give the impression of longer, thinner legs. Although the obvious temptation is to hide your calves in trousers or long dresses, you can still look gorgeous in a skirt.

The simple shape of an A-line dress that flares gently towards the knee will help create the illusion of thinner calves. The mustard, cotton dress by Tara Jarmon  (€325, Arnotts) is beautifully cut and the colour is ideal for a summer wedding. Style with metallic accessories and a white cardigan or coat.

For a chic and sophisticated look, the black, white and gold dress by Summum at Palua Boutique in Leixlip (€109) is a flattering design that nods to this season's love affair of monochrome.

Irish-designed label Luke Lovely's spring/summer collection features a colour-block navy, stone and turquoise dress with cowl-neck detail and half-length sleeve (€169.95, Kilkenny Shop).

Your choice of shoe is paramount, and anything with ankle straps or T-bars should be avoided as these cut the line of the leg and emphasise your calves and ankles.

Also, steer clear of flats or spike stiletto heels, as these won't do you any favours either. The best option is a stacked heel in an open-toe style.

If you'd rather a full-length dress, the purple, belted, spot maxi by Jonathan Saunders Edition at Debenhams ( €139) is summer elegance in a dress.
