Style Dilemma

Darren Kennedy

I'M NEARLY 40. AM I TOO OLD TO WEAR A BOMBER JACKET?

I'm fast approaching 40 and I'm trying to figure out if it's acceptable for me to wear a bomber jacket? If so, would you be able to recommend a few styles?

Mark, Dublin

BOMBER jackets are the ultimate in utilitarian menswear. Having started life in the early part of the 20th century, they were originally designed for US fighter pilots. This year, many fashion houses have decided to once again enlist the vintage aviator classic.

Designers have put a contemporary twist on this modern staple using fabrics such as quilted leather, wool blends and velvety suede.

The perfect blend of design and functionality, the fit of a bomber jacket has timeless appeal, which has spanned generations, so I wouldn't be too concerned about age. Topman, River Island, Reiss, Urban Outfitters and Zara are all stocking great high-street options.

Black is the obvious choice, but Zara's bomber with faux leather sleeves in brown (1 €99.95) is an interesting alternative. For classic military green, Acne's 'Sid' jacket is generously padded with insulating goose down to withstand the worst of winter (2 €560, MrPorter.com).

Over at Penneys you'll find a green bomber with a fur-lined hood (3 €26).

The new 'Crafted In' collection at Asos is a capsule line with a distinct heritage feel. Their checked bomber in Harris Tweed is a subtle statement-maker (4 €134.78).
