Style Anatomy: Rachel Bilson
Although she never quite joined Hollywood’s upper echelons following her breakthrough role as Summer Roberts in ‘The OC’, when it comes to style, Rachel Bilson is a bona fide A-lister.
The 30-year-old, who is currently starring in TV show ‘Hart of Dixie’ is as much a pro at dressing up for red carpet events, as she is at looking stylish in her downtime. One of the secrets to her dress success is that she never shows off too much flesh. Skirts that could be belts and acres of cleavage are not her thing and she has previously turned down offers to do lads’ mags shoots because she says her body is: "not there for the whole world to see."
That doesn’t translate into sartorial dullness however. The actress has a good eye for dressing for her size (she’s a very petite 5ft 1) and doesn’t overwhelm her tiny frame, preferring to opt for either a statement dress or standout shoes, but not both, for red carpet events.
She told ‘Heat’ magazine:"I'd say a simple little dress with minimalist hair and jewellery. I like to either make the dress or the shoe the statement and keep the focus there."
Although Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is a fan of the actress (he directed her in an ad for Magnum ice cream alongside top male model Baptiste Giabiconi) and she has been seen in Chanel, she mixes her designer with vintage. Rachel says that at heart, she’s a low maintenance jeans girl and also professes a love of TopShop and Zara.
This outfit here is classic Rachel – a masculine-meets-feminine fresh and fun look that will take her from red carpet to dinner and aftershow party.
But in case you think that her style comes naturally to her, Rachel admits that she puts a lot of effort into it.
“I know this sounds terribly shallow, but I’ve been mapping out my outfits for the next day every day since I was little, even before high school,” she said. “I have a very busy mind – there’s constant chitter-chatter up there – but what I’m wearing the next day? That’s definitely something that’s always been in my head before I go to sleep at night.”
