Former Miss Ireland Emma Waldron enjoyed her first TV appearance in the US as she weighed in on the issue of the first ever plus-size model to appear in Sports Illustrated's famous swimsuit magazine.

Ahead of her appearance on MSNBC's The Reid Report, the 25-year-old spoke to the Herald about the need for models of all sizes.

Model Ashley Graham, who wears an Irish size 18, made history as the first plus-size models ever to grace the pages of the magazine.

"Previously, the popular body type was very skinny, almost androgynous, which didn't reflect the majority of people, so it's great to see it diversifying," Emma said.

"It's offering up a whole new category of women, and the industry is beginning to see the effect that these images have on the world. People will feel happier."

Back home, Ireland's premier plus-size model, Louise O'Reilly, echoed this sentiment.

"It's fantastic, it's such a positive move that should have been done a long time ago - I'm thrilled to see it," she told the Herald.

Emma is an Irish size 10, but her move to New York has seen her listed as a "curve" model with her new agency, MSA models.

The former teacher said she was "not at all" bothered by her curvy label Stateside.

"My body is my body - it doesn't matter what label they put on it," she said.

Her move across the Atlantic has been going well and she was thrilled with the invitation from MSNBC.

"It's kind of shocking," she said.

Her relocation to New York was a brave decision for the young fashionista.

"It took a lot of time and courage to get here because you are leaving a lot behind, not just friends and family but a professional base too," Emma said.

She moved into a Wall Street apartment last weekend and is looking forward to new challenges in the Big Apple.

"Please God I won't mess it up," she joked.
