shoes for hill-walking that can be worn casually, too

I started hill-walking in Wicklow during the warm weather but quickly discovered that my basic runners weren't up to it. I'm on the lookout for a pair of shoes that will manage casual, light hill walks; be waterproof; and are casual enough to wear during the day with jeans.

The Great Outdoors in Dublin is a one-stop shop for all kinds of outdoor adventures, stocking a wide selection of specialist brands including The North Face, Salomon and Merrell.

The 'Kalalau' by Salomon is a lightweight, breathable shoe ideal for gentle adventures (1 €99.99, The Great Outdoors).

The Geox Amphibiox range features a new generation of waterproof technology that keeps feet dry while increasing breathability and durability. The collection includes the 'Sandro' (2 €133, House of Fraser), an understated trainer with a gentle pop of colour, and the 'Mattias' brown boot (3 €165, House of Fraser), which will look spot-on with a pair of jeans.

Over at Camper, while not specifically designed with hill-walking in mind, the 'Pelotas Kravdat' boot will transition easily from a day hike to cocktail hour (4 €185).

Timberland's 'Radler Approach Low' trainer is made using premium brown suede and features a climbing-grade rubber toe bumper for protection and durability (5 €100), as well as treated leather upper for water resistance.

Rockport on Dublin's Wicklow Street stocks the 'truWALKzero' collection engineered to promote a natural stride. It includes the navy and light-green 'T-Toe' trainer (6 €115). Rockport is owned by Adidas, so every style incorporates shock-absorbing sports technology for maximum comfort.
