Saoirse Ronan looks stunning in custom-made peacock dress at Brooklyn premiere
ACTRESS Saoirse Ronan looked stunning in a custom-made peacock dress at the Irish premiere of Brooklyn last night.
Saoirse, who appeared on the red carpet alongside Bono and his wife Ali last night, was wearing a bespoke dress by Helen Steele.
Helen, a fashion designer based in Monaghan, proudly shared a snap of Saoirse on her Instagram.
Last night, Saoirse praised Jennifer Lawrence for writing her “wage gap” essay and for criticising double standards in the film industry, and she spoke of the frustration she feels with regard to the lack of strong female roles.
“I hope the likes of Jennifer Lawrence speaking out forces things to change,” she said.
“There are so many roles where women are simply supporting. They are the crutch, the sister, the assistant or the girlfriend, and that’s as far as the definition goes. That needs to change.”
Saoirse said she was shocked recently when a close friend auditioned for a role in a movie where the female character was described as “the leading man’s type”.
“It said ‘just his type’, that was the character’s description, that was her definition,” she said. “That has to change, and in order to change we need to have more female directors, producers and writers.”
Set in the 1950s, Brooklyn tells the story of a young Irish woman who moves to the US. The film has generated plenty of Oscar buzz, and Saoirse hopes it will shift industry attitudes on female roles.
“I hope we’ll see more films about women and women’s interactions. I hope we’ll see films where women help each other rather than being catty of bitchy,” she said.
The premiere attracted plenty of big names including Bono, Ali Hewson and Colm Toibin as well as Caroline Downey, Eva Birthistle and Jenn Murray.
