Red carpet wrap

Everyone's favourite friend takes on Maggie Gyllenhaal in this week's red carpet battle, as we ask who dazzled under the lights and who needs to sack the stylist?

Worst dressed: Jennifer Aniston

You've got to give her marks for trying, or at the very least frequent flyer points. She certainly has earned them, as she circumnavigates the globe in ever desperate attempts to drum up interest in her latest turkey.

Poor old Jen, perhaps it's time to plan a different career. She looks as if she's finally considering her options, as she wearily performs her signature role and cosies up to yet another co-star. You can literally read her mind. Romance? As if!

Between strict adherence to the Zone diet (jeez, just how much longer can I be expected to star in a pair of denim hot pants?!), long wistful walks on the beach with the dogs (I may have been dumped by Brad for the world's sexiest woman, but I'm still attractive, dammit!) and starring in a string of forgettable rom-coms (what wouldn't I give for the chance to work with Woody?), how am I supposed to find time for a man?!

Even so, Jen, take our advice and free up your schedule for a stylist. You clearly have reached the end of your tether, and a beige beach towel is never going to be flattering.

Best dressed: Maggie Gyllenhaal

They have access to designer wardrobes mere mortals could only dream of, yet so many celebrities still manage to get it wrong on the red carpet.

They can't seem to resist pouring themselves into super short, super tight or just plain wrong little numbers in the misguided belief that less is more. Not Ms Gyllenhaal though, the clever indie queen knows better.

Here she is dazzling in a fabulous black confection with a cream pleated panel from Vionnet's Pre-Fall 2010 collection. We really love it. And actually we'd quite like this one for our own wardrobe...
