Q I'm going to invest in a black pencil skirt. I would appreciate your advice on what shoes to wear. I am 5'10" and usually avoid very high heels. I wear block or wedge heels instead of stiletto but I think stiletto would work best with the pencil skirt. I would love to add colourful shoes as the tops I have to wear with it are black and white.

A If you walk into any shoe shop or department store at this time of year, you'll be greeted by a visual cornucopia of fabulous footwear where you can feast your eyes on colourful loafers, cut-out wedges, sleek pumps, stilettos and flatforms.
A black pencil skirt is something of a classic and a versatile wardrobe piece that you can dress up or down depending on the occasion. A pop of colour in an outfit always looks fresh and can breathe new life into old ensembles. For instance the fuchsia 1) block heel sandal with lattice detailing at Simplybe.ie (€49.99) will not only brighten up your look but will also inject some texture.
Channel this season's vogue for metallics with the 2) 'Ghost' pointed court from Amy Huberman's S/S14 shoe collection (€99.99, Arnotts).
A neutral such as nude will work with any colour and has the added bonus of elongating the leg. Try the 3) nude peep-toe boot (€40) at Dunnes Stores.
Alternatively, embrace fashion's mono-moment with the classic black and white colourway for a pared-down aesthetic. The 4) Pippa heeled sandal (€30) at Boohoo.com will give a cool nod to Parisian chic.
Of course it doesn't have to be all about heels. For an off-duty look, team your skirt with a colourful sweater and a pair of trainers or flat pumps for a sports luxe vibe.
