Queen of Prints Orla Kiely is fabulous at fifty
THE 'Queen of Prints' big birthday is being celebrated in style in her hometown.
Orla Kiely turns 50 and the Kilkenny store on Dublin's Nassau Street has gone Kiely mad, with windows forming an homage to the Dubliner whose signature stem design is a favourite with Kate Middleton.
The Kilkenny chain has a special reason for running its 'Celebrate Orla Kiely' event between May 15-25.
It was the first store to stock her handbags in the capital and admits it has pride in how far the mother-of-two, born and raised in Shankill, Co Dublin, has grown her company to become a global success.
"I'd like to think that the Kilkenny shop played a role in launching her career in the Irish market and turning her into a household name,'' said Marion O'Gorman, CEO of the Kilkenny Group.
Prices in its exhibition yesterday ran from €9.95 for a pen and up to €2,500 for a kitchen unit reminiscent of the mid-century teak furniture that Kiely has in her own London home.
Always uber discrete about discussing her famous royal customer, Kate Middleton, Kiely politely says "it's wonderful" that Kate wears her dresses and that she "looks absolutely great in them''.
