Q I am starting college in September and really need your help in updating my wardrobe with some new pieces. I'm usually a jeans and jumper kinda girl but would really like to shake things up a bit. Could you recommend some versatile, good quality items? I am 5'4" and a size 10-12. I am also working on a student budget, so cheap and cheerful, please!

AYour first day at college is an exciting time and a really big deal. It's important to make the right first impression. Great to hear that you have the basics sorted as these will stand you in good stead.

This season's ultimate wear-with-everything kind of cover up is, without doubt, the kimono. For instance, the 1) 'Evie' paisley belted kimono with tassel fringed hem (€30, Boohoo.com) is a great alternative to a cardi, and will instantly transform a simple jeans and tee combo for a cool, off-duty vibe. Similarly, worn open, it will liven up a simple LBD (little black dress). Throw on a flirty fedora for good measure and the result is instant, insouciant chic.

Another essential piece of clobber for any style-savvy student this season is 2) a midi skirt, a staple piece for day and evening. The faux leather oxblood style (€52, Next) taps into the trend for all things red for autumn/winter 2014. When it comes to footwear, an ankle boot is a must. The 3) blush pink tassel boots (€25, Heatons) are a great transitional piece for everyday wear while 4) a pewter heeled ankle boot (€60, Dorothy Perkins) gives the classic a modern metallic update.

As for outerwear, oversized, woolly coats are everywhere, with pale pink lingering from last season. If you already own one, you're sorted. If not, add 5) a pink textured wool coat to your shopping list (€30, Penneys, in stores September). Best of luck!
