Paris Hilton upsets Islamic community by opening handbag shop in Mecca
Socialite Paris Hilton has prompted outrage by opening a hand bag and accessories shop in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
The New York Daily News reports that Paris, who came to prominence after a leaked sex tape, upset the Islamic community when she posted news of the store’s opening on her Twitter account.
The 31-year-old wrote: Loving my beautiful new store that just opened at Mecca Mall in Saudi Arabia!
One commenter posted in response to her tweet: "So Paris Hilton opened a handbag store in MECCA? The world is a corrupt place at the moment. Someone please send me to Mars”
Another referred to her infamous sex tape and noted: "How can someone who made such a video open a store in the holy city next to the Grand Mosque?"
However this is the socialite and designer’s fifth store in Saudi Arabia and she has 42 stores worldwide. Her business empire now carries 17 product lines, including 14 fragrances, a Beach Club Chain and a racing team.
In September, the heiress outraged the gay community after a leaked recording by website Radar heard her say about the gay community: “They're disgusting. Dude, most of them probably have AIDS."
She subsequently issued a lengthy apology where she claimed she was a strong supporter of the gay community.

"I was having this private conversation with a friend of mine who is gay and our conversation was in no way towards the entire gay community," she said.
