My Make-Up And Me
Sarah Jane Seymour is a musician and actress and is currently rehearsing for a role in Siabh. She lives in Meath.
I need to set aside at least 10-15 mins to do my make-up in the morning, not because I plaster it on or anything but because I actually enjoy the whole process. I always tone and moisturise before I brush on my foundation. I'll then apply some volumising mascara - Yves Saint Laurent False Lash Effect is my fave .
Usually I don’t wear eye shadow unless I have a meeting or I am going out, but if I want to make my eyes stand out that bit more I’ll brush a little black eye shadow on the outside of my bottom lid and blend it, works a treat. Then I apply a healthy blush to the apples of my cheeks and before I leave I apply a little Burt’s Bees lip balm - good to go!
First beauty memories?
Well my mother is a beauty therapist so I’ve been around make up my whole life but my earliest memory is probably sitting on my mom’s bed watching her put on her eye shadow. I was amazed at how expertly she blended the light and dark colours. I also remember attacking her make-up bag and putting lipstick on my cheeks in two big circles for blusher! I was gorgeous!
I think it was a No.7 foundation my mom bought me because I had been stealing her Dior foundation to wear to school.
What's your top tip?
Always take off your make up before you go to sleep, you’ll look and feel the better for it in the morning. Mom used to chase me with cleanser and toner when I’d come in from a night out so I was forced to take it as a habit. It should stand you, and if you can find some cleanser or a facewash rather than make-up wipe, it’s much better for your skin, less drying.
Do you go out without make-up?
I barely go past the front door without slap, unless I’m sick and then I might answer the front door au naturel. I think when you get used to wearing it every day, it’s very hard to go without. My worst fear is leaving my make-up bag somewhere. I'm terrified of that, I know loads of girls who say the same. It's a common nightmare.
In the bag and on the wish list?
Ooh, I have a lovely Dior Forever foundation and an Yves Saint Laurent mascara that I got in my stocking for Christmas but I usually try to keep them for going out. My every day foundation is the Maybelline Stayfresh 16hr foundation in Nude, it is a dual applicator and it glides on to your face and like it says on the tin, stays fresh all day so there’s no need for re-application.
I love L’Oreal eye shadows so I have about four palettes, but I mostly stick to smoky greys / blacks or honey / brown. I have three or four Bourjois eyeliners in Black and Grey and if I dig around there's a Rimmel Sun Shimmer in Light Matte which I use to blend. I love the Bourjois blushers, it has a slight shimmer and smells lovely!
I find the Oil-Balancing moisturiser by Simple suits my skin best and it has a lovely light feeling. It doesn’t matter how expensive or good your foundation is, unless your moisturiser suits your skin it doesn't work. I use Mac Prep+Prime for under my foundation, I keep it for special days, it makes the make up glide on like silk. I also have Lancome Nutrix which I think is a must-have. Then there's the lip balms .... I keep about four, but the collection keeps growing, growing, growing
What's the most you've ever spent on a product and why did you buy it?
Probably the Dior foundation I bought for my mom this year as a Christmas present - 89 blips! She loves it though and she's totally worth it.
Do you tend to go for bargain buys or are you swayed by the adverts?
I’m ashamed to admit I am swayed by shiny things, so I am actually convinced if I use L’Oreal foundation I’ll look exactly like Eva Longoria and am rather disappointed when I don’t.
Where do you shop for a beauty fix?
Mom’s magic make-up bag .... if she catches me out it's usually Mac - although I adore the Benefit products and their packaging. I spend the most in Boots but it seems to be a fair trade off.
Is there a trend you would like to see come into fashion?
I’m pretty sure I’ve done my make-up exactly the same way since I was 14 so, no!
Who's vanity case would you snoop in?
Ooh, Angelina Jolie’s - her eye make-up is fabulous. But I love snooping in pretty much anyone’s make-up bag. It’s like a bag of new toys to me.
What product, secret or beauty tip couldn't you live without?
Lancome Nutrix is my essential beauty fix. Even if your skin is dry or blotchy or just feeling below its best, put on a little Nutrix before you go to sleep and you’ll wake up with well hydrated and better looking and feeling skin. It’s expensive but worth it!
