Galwegian Philip Treacy has shown yet again that he has the genius to turn the millinery world on its head.

Just ask the fashion world Down Under, agog after actress Sarah Jessica Parker turned up at a ladies' lunch in Melbourne wearing his 'Oversized Shell' hat, made from faux snakes in lycra and sinamay.

Described by one critic as "an outrageous satellite dish", the woven black piece comes seven months after Treacy's 'toilet seat' hat which Princess Beatrice wore to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and which later became a source of controversy and an internet sensation.

Mother-of-three SJP (46) is a fan of the Irishman's style and has worn his creations to the London premieres of both 'Sex and the City' movies.

After grabbing the headlines with the black curved spiral headpiece yesterday -- one newspaper lambasted it as resembling a 'Slinky' stairs toy -- Treacy promised even more drama in SJP's hat for Oaks Day, the third day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

According to staff at Treacy's London studio yesterday, the Oversized Shell creation was an archive piece from 1998, with Treacy confirming that it took 200 hours to make.

SJP wore the circular-shaped hat creating an opposite shape to her narrow face. The sinamay which Treacy used is a modern form of woven straw and forms interesting patterns on the wearer's face.

The 'Sex and the City' star wore the hat with a bronze tweed Chanel dress and Manola Blahnik heels.

Lucky SJP -- who is in Australia to promote her latest movie, 'I don't Know How She Does It' -- has the pick of Treacy's hats as the Irish milliner is also in Melbourne.

Treacy was invited to the famous Flemington racecourse as the VRC International Style Ambassador for the 2011 Melbourne Cup Carnival. More than 1,500 women attended yesterday's lunch which is part of the annual Melbourne Cup.

Treacy, who hails from the village Ahrascragh, is no shrinking violet and maintains that fashion is about suspense and surprise, promising that his next hat for SJP will surprise everyone as much as the Oversized Shell.

SJP and her husband Matthew Broderick have strong connections to Ireland as they have a holiday home in Co Donegal which they regularly visit.
