Officially, it is the first day of spring and with it comes a welcome colour explosion.

The fashion world bids adieu to the greys and navys and inevitable blacks of winter, clearing the decks for a profusion of colour and feminine fantasy.

Freedom, vibrancy and optimism are the buzzwords and all was revealed yesterday as Brown Thomas launched their Masters of Fashion & Beauty campaign, which runs until April 24 with a series of workshops and 'How To' fashion clinics run by international designers, industry experts and top Irish stylists like Sonya Lennon.

The new love affair with the hedonistic 1970s is a tempting distraction from election mania, carrying a whiff of disco fever coupled with a luxurious take on the 'Out of Africa' safari look.

Meanwhile, Balenciaga and Givenchy's diversion into punk carries a strong accent on leather and leopard prints.

Brown Thomas fashion director Shelly Corkery said it was a "message of simplicity, cherishing more basic silhouettes, offering reassurance in its very fashionability".
