'I'm wearing them because I'm trying to get in touch with my inner rock chick'
Wearing leather trousers elicits only one question from anyone who sees me in them – the question "why".
"Why are you wearing leather trousers," my friend asks when I arrive in them at a children's party.
"Because they're back in," I answer. "And Elle Macpherson says they're cool. She wears hers on the school run."
"Since when do you care what Elle Macpherson says or wears? It looks kinda weird." Right. Not exactly the response I was hoping for.
"Why are you wearing leather trousers?" I'm asked by a colleague in The Times newsroom. "Er, because I'm trying to get in touch with my inner rock chick." Why does there have to be a reason?
The only place I'm not asked why I'm wearing them is actually on the school run – which is where Elle likes to parade hers. There no one has time to notice.
Unlike The Body, who manages to fit in a full-on photo shoot for the waiting paparazzi at drop off, at my school gates there's only enough time to dump and dash.
But in case anyone's wondering how my burgundy leather jeans from Freda actually feel on this 38-year-old, well they're comfy, don't make me sweat but are prone to sagging.
Oh, and for the first time in about seven years, I can fit into a size 8. If that isn't a good reason to wear them, I don't know what is.
